We started out as a surveying and civil engineering firm, but we have expanded our expertise to broaden the services we can provide to clients. Summit now has 15 departments providing every service from initial planning and funding assistance to maintenance management of existing facilities along with anything else you could possibly need in between.
By offering a full complement of design and engineering services we can be involved in a project from the beginning to the end. We offer streamlined communication, easy access to project managers and the highest quality of work. We make it a priority to stay within your budget, because our goal is to ensure that your project is done on time and exactly how you envisioned it.
There is an art to designing structures to enrich peoples' lives that are also sensitively integrated into their physical, cultural and natural environments. By fostering a collaborative and personalized process, our architectural team creates innovative design responses for new construction, adaptive re-use, urban in-fill, renovations, additions and design-build for various project types and methods of construction. Our solid grasp of high performance building codes, coupled with our passion for strategic sustainable principles, help our clients maximize their space in a timely, cost-efficient manner.
We offer comprehensive management and inspection services for highway and rail construction and highway maintenance operations. Our CEI technicians provide inspection services for ITS and traffic signal systems, grading, erosion control, drainage, paving and structures. Our CEI branch has adopted iPad technology so field technicians can now deliver real-time reports, monitor jobs more efficiently and document projects through pictures. By utilizing iPads, Summit has eliminated using the paper previously required for these duties.
A successful project from early development to completion begins and ends with communication and leadership. Relaying the owner’s needs and expectations to architects, engineers and contractors is an important role in every project, large or small. The coordination and scheduling of the many moving parts that it takes to make a project come together as a whole, can be as important as performing any one of the individual tasks. Here at Summit, our construction management team has the tools and experience to provide that service. Our construction management team has over 20 years of experience providing representation and leadership for all types of projects: vertical, horizontal, residential and commercial.
Geotechnical engineers at Summit perform subsurface investigations and geotechnical evaluations for the transportation industry as well as for educational, governmental, institutional, commercial and industrial projects. Summit's drill team maintains and operates four variably mounted drill rigs capable of responding to almost every client need imaginable. Each rig is equipped to deal with unique soil conditions and terrain, giving Summit the unmatched ability to obtain subsurface samples from almost anywhere.
Summit has started a Coatings Inspection Department. Coatings inspection is becoming a large industry due to the estimated $276 billion dollars in direct costs of corrosion in the U.S. transportation industry. Coatings that are correctly applied to steel and concrete structures maximize the service life of those structures. Our team, led by Kerry Corley PCS, MCI, consists of NACE and SSPC certified coatings professionals with an extensive background and wealth of knowledge in the coatings industry. Summit has already begun bridge rehab projects for NCDOT. Our team of inspectors have worked on coatings projects ranging from $86 million to $400,000. We are currently working on a high profile project on the Biltmore Estate that consists of 10 bridges.

Individualized, professional services to every client are a central philosophy of the firm. Our staff is directly involved and responsible for each client. This is accomplished with the aid of talented employees educated and experienced in strategic and comprehensive planning, demographic and market research, financial analysis and modeling, redevelopment planning, government-funded acquisition and relocation, and project development and management. The firm places a great deal of emphasis on community and stakeholder involvement, graphic communication, and "hands-on" assistance. Our approach embraces the belief that planning is a necessary prelude to informed decision making and the successful completion of a project and implementation of a plan.
