Summit is the prime consultant for the I-73 Design-Build QA/QC contract. Summit provides assistant resident level staff and below. This project is a 10.5 mile section of the Greensboro Outer Loop on new location. The project consists of 14 bridges, six culverts, and sound and retaining walls. Some of the bridge structures are specialty type bridges, one of which is for the PTI airport taxiway. Many portions of the construction are located in extremely environmentally sensitive areas, which require delicate procedures in order to preserve local ecosystems. Staff level is in excess of 25 technicians and engineers. This project contains 36,000 LF of micro-piles, the largest on any project within the state of North Carolina. These micro-piles are used as replacement for standard H-pile or drilled shafts. Summit also provided surveying services for this section of I-73, as well as surveying grade verification.
Summit was selected by NCDOT as the prime consultant for the Monroe Expressway connection from US 74 near I-485 in Mecklenberg County to US 74 between Wingate and Marshville in Union County. Summit is providing NCDOT CEI, structures inspections and materials sampling and testing. For this project, Summit staffed one Resident Engineer, three assistant Resident Engineers and 34 technicians between our own and our sub-consultant’s employees. Summit also assisted with all testing and inspection for toll operations to begin once the road opened. Summit inspected all aspects for 7 ORT facilities and gantries for toll collections.
This was the first Intelligent Transportation System(ITS), Design-Build project in North Carolina. As the prime construction engineering, inspection and quality control firm for the Design-Build team, Summit provided CEI inspection of the Intellligent Transportation System work on NCTA's Western Wake Freeway and Triangle Expressway. Our scope of work included inspection of the installation of fiber optic cable, microwave vehicle detection systems, closed-circuit television cameras, dynamic message signs and the integration of all ITS communications along the road corridor and directly to the Triangle Regional Management Center, State Emergency Operating Center and NCTA's Customer Service Center.
