NCDOT Monroe Expressway

Mecklenberg and Union Counties, N.C.


We served as the prime consultant for the $466M Monroe Expressway connection from US 74 near I-485 in Mecklenburg County to US 74 between Wingate and Marshville in Union County. An 18-mile, completely electronic toll road, the Monroe Bypass was the largest NCDOT project in history when construction started. Now that it’s operational, the Bypass is improving the mobility and capacity of the previously congested US 74 by allowing high-speed regional travel to bypass traffic meant just for the commercial businesses in the US 74 corridor.

We provided Construction Engineering Inspection (CEI), structures inspections, and materials sampling and testing. At the project’s peak construction, we provided one Resident Engineer, three assistant Resident Engineers, and our entire team provided 34 technicians. The scope of this project also included the construction of 37 bridges and 21 box culverts. We inspected all aspects of the 7 Open Roads Tolling (ORT) facilities and gantries for toll collections to meet the aggressive schedule for the opening of the roadway. The Expressway opened to traffic on November 27, 2018.

We are providing industrial coatings and inspection services on a four-bridge rehabilitation project for the NC Department of Transportation. These four bridges are located throughout Smithfield, NC in NCDOT Division 4.
